Description

George Melvin Richardson became the principal of Hoffman-Boston in the early 1950s after graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Langston University and later with a master’s degree from Columbia University, eventually completing the requirements for a doctorate degree as well. When Hoffman-Boston closed in 1964, he moved to Wakefield High School (along with many of his students who lived in Nauck/Green Valley and had attended Hoffman-Boston) and served as vice principal for two years. Mr. Richardson was interviewed by Judy Knudsen and John Stanton on October 11, 2013, and his interview is available in its full audio and typed transcript forms. You can also read and listen to excerpts from his oral history, regarding segregated seating at public events, his educational philosophy, and some of the harassment and intimidation he received from opponents to desegregation.
