Description

Margarite Reed Syphax moved to Arlington in 1947 with her husband William Syphax. The pair were active members of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and created their own construction and property management company, building custom homes and offices throughout the greater metropolitan area. Along with her business enterprise, Ms. Syphax was involved in community development through music, education and more. She was interviewed by Cas Cocklin and Edmund Campbell on May 11, 1989, and the oral history is available here in its audio and typed transcript forms. You can also read and listen to excerpts from the interview regarding her memories of the strength of Hoffman-Boston and the Nauck community during the years of segregation, and her reflections on the impacts of desegregation.
