Mr. and Mrs. Henry Robinson
1801 South Glebe Road
Arlington, Virginia
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Robinson:
The Arlington School Board recently concluded a study of school
assignments for students that are a ffected by long distance busing. A
decision was made to reassign some students who liv e in the Nauck and
Arlington View areas to schools clo ser to th eir hones, thus shortening
the time that students have to ride to and from school.
Students frctn the Nauck or Arlington View areas for the 1987-88
school year may choose to remain in th e ir current schools or transfer
to the newly assigned schools. In your son James' case, he may con
tinue at Tuckahoe next year or transfer to the school which w ill now
serve your area. The elementary school which w ill now serve your area
i s Barcroft, 625 South Wakefield S treet.
The Intermediate School and High School assignments for James
w ill not change when he reaches those le v e ls . He w ill attend Williamsburg
and Yorktown.
Please le t me know in writing by Friday, M 1, of your decision
ay
concerning James' school assignment for next school year, Barcroft or
Tuckahoe.
I f you have qu estion s, please c a ll me 538-1023.
Sincerely,

John R. W illis

Dear Ms. Ford:
As I discussed with you by telephone e a r lie r in the school year,
your daughter Tori w ill have to attend the elementary school that serves
your area next year. Actually, Tori was not supposed to attend Tuckahoe
th is year, but due to an enrollment error she did begin. W
hen the error
was discovered, i t was decided to le t her fin is h the year here since she
would have to make another change for the 1987-88 school year.
The school that Tori has been assigned to i s much closer to home.
Her bus ride w ill be shorter. The new school for Tori is Barcroft, 625
South Wakefield S treet. She w ill attend Barcroft through elementary
sch o o l.
T ori's Intermediate School and High School assignments w ill remain
the same, Williamsburg and Yorktown.
You w ill receive word soon from the Barcroft principal concerning the
new school assignment for 1987-88.
I f you have qu estion s, please c a ll me, 538-1023.

Re:

Dear Mrs. Daley:
On March 19, 1987, the Arlington County School Board redefined the
attendance area for elementary and intermediate school students who
live in the Nauck community. As a result of this redistricting, the
intermediate school serving your address is Swanson Intermediate
School, 5800 Washington Boulevard, phone number 538-1100.
I sincerely regret any inconvenience this School Board decision
causes you and Rosie.

i
If you wish your child to attend Kenmore, you may do so under two
conditions permitted by the School Board Policies:
1.

If there is an older child in your family who will be
attending Kenmore in '87-'88.

2.

You may request an instructional transfer from Swanson
to Kenmore.

I would appreciate your completing the form enclosed and returning it
to me in the enclosed return envelope by May 1, 1987.

DEAR MS. GREEN:
THIS IS THE LETTER JANE MURRAY, TAYLOR'S GUIDANCE COUNSELOR,
PROMISED DURING HER TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH YOU. THIS LETTER AND
THE ATTACHED MATERIAL WILL GIVE YOU THE EXACT DETAILS OF DESEGREGATION
DECISIONS RECENTLY APPROVED BY ARLINGTON'S SCHOOL BOARD.
IN BRIEF, THE DESEGREGATION DECISIONS ESTABLISHED NEW SCHOOL
BOUNDARIES FOR STUDENTS LIVING IN ARLINGTON'S NAUCK COMMUNITY. THE
NEW BOUNDARIES ESTABLISH NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS FOR THE COMMUNITY BY
BRINGING SCHOOLS CLOSER TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND REDUCING THE DISTANCE
YOUNGSTERS TRAVEL TO SCHOOL.
THE NEW ATTENDANCE BOUNDARIES FOR YOUR FAMILY DO NOT REQUIRE A
CHANGE IN SCHOOLS FOR CHRIS NEXT YEAR. YOUR NEW SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
PATTERN IS BARCROFT-WILLIAMSBURG-YORKTOWN. THEREFORE, CHRIS WILL
ATTEND WILLIAMSBURG INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL NEXT YEAR AS WE ORGINALLY
PLANNED.
SHOULD YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MATERIAL ATTACHED TO
THIS LETTER OR OTHER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NEW ATTENDANCE BOUNDARIES,
PLEASE BE SURE TO CALL ME OR JANE MURRAY AT 558-2994.

DEAR MRS. COURTNEY:

NEW BOUNDARIES ESTABLISH NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS FOR THE COMMUNITY BY
BRINGING SCHOOLS CLOSER TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND REDUCING THE DISTANCE
YOUNGSTERS TRAVEL TO SCHOOL.
THE NEW ATTENDANCE BOUNDARIES FOR YOUR FAMILY DO NOT REQUIRE A
CHANGE IN SCHOOLS FOR LA VONDA AND TERRI NEXT YEAR. HOWEVER, AN
OPTION DOES EXIST ALLOWING YOU TO CHANGE. YOUR NEW SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
PATTERN IS RANDOLPH ELEMENTARY-SWANSON INTERMEDIATE-WASHINGTON LEE
HIGH SCHOOL. YOUR FAMILY HAS AN OPTION TO REMAIN AT TAYLOR DUE TO
SCHOOL BOARD ACTIONS ALLOWING NEXT YEAR'S FIFTH GRADERS (TERRI) TO
REMAIN AT THEIR PRESENT SCHOOLS UNTIL THEY GRADUATE. LA VONDA WOULD
ALSO BE ALLOWED TO STAY AT TAYLOR AS LONG AS TERRI REMAINS HERE.
HOWEVER, WHEN TERRI GRADUATES FROM TAYLOR AT THE END OF SCHOOL YEAR
1988/89, LA VONDA WOULD THEN BE REQUIRED TO TRANSFER TO RANDOLPH FOR
HER FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADES.
THE OPTION IS YOURS.
I WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO HAVE LA VONDA
AND TERRI RETURN TO TAYLOR, YET THEY WOULD BOTH BE VERY WELCOMED AT
RANDOLPH.
I NEED TO KNOW YOUR PREFERENCE BY THE END OF THIS WEEK SO
PROPER PLANS CAN BE MADE BASED ON YOUR FAMILY'S DECISION. PLEASE
COMPLETE THE FORM BELOW AND RETURN IT TO SCHOOL BY FRIDAY, MAY 1.
SHOULD YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MATERIAL ATTACHED TO
THIS LETTER, YOUR OPTIONS, OR OTHER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NEW ATTENDANCE
BOUNDARIES, PLEASE BE SURE TO CALL ME OR JANE MURRAY AT 558-2994.
SINCERELY,
