Subject
Desegregation
Description
Lance Newman was one of the first four students to break the segregation barriers in Arlington Public Schools by attending the previously all-white Stratford Junior High School in 1959. Mr. Newman grew up in the Hall’s Hill neighborhood, a historically African-American community in northern Arlington County. After graduating from Washington-Lee High School, Mr. Newman went on to attend Howard University. He was interviewed for the Arlington Public Library Oral History Program by Judith Knudsen and Joanna Dressel, and his interview is available in its full audio and typed transcript forms. You can also read and listen to excerpts from his oral history, regarding his preparation for his transition to Stratford, the events of the first day, and the experience of living in a tight-knit, though segregated, community.
