Description

Evelyn Syphax came to Arlington as a teacher at the then-segregated, all-black Langston Elementary School. Ms. Syphax continued teaching and improving Arlington Schools; she was appointed to the School Board in 1980 and became Chairperson of the School Board in 1982. She was dedicated to educational opportunity for all students, and had a particular focus on the unique situation of black students in the county. She was interviewed by Edmund Campbell on February 9, 1984, and that oral history is available in its full audio and typed transcript forms.
